Design and Security

Why is Apple successful?

Design.

I don’t mean they make great looking hardware. I also don’t mean they make great looking software. Design is much more than looks. Donald Norman’s The Design of Everyday Things goes into detail about how good design is more about usability than looks. In good design, everything just works.

Why is most software awful?

Let me give you an example: I’m trying to write a document in my editor. I want to make a hyperlink. Right-click, hyperlink. Cool, it’s got a hyperlink. Now i want to type normal text. Right-click, remove hyperlink. Wait, that removed the whole hyperlink. Let me try making a space, then remove hyperlink. No, that didn’t work. I give up.

What does this have to do with security?

In good design, everything just works. Secure systems are designed well from the beginning. Take a step back. Take a deep breath. Think for a while. Then design. Don’t rush. Don’t add unnecessary features. Test your designs.

Is it possible?

Yes. Good design will pay off in the end. Whether you are configuring a firewall, writing a mobile device policy or selecting a vendor a little work up front make a big difference in the end. Remember, take a step back. Take a deep breath. Think for a while. Design.
