Why is most software awful?
Let me give you an example: I’m trying to write a document in my editor. I want to make a hyperlink. Right-click, hyperlink. Cool, it’s got a hyperlink. Now i want to type normal text. Right-click, remove hyperlink. Wait, that removed the whole hyperlink. Let me try making a space, then remove hyperlink. No, that didn’t work. I give up.
What does this have to do with security?
In good design, everything just works. Secure systems are designed well from the beginning. Take a step back. Take a deep breath. Think for a while. Then design. Don’t rush. Don’t add unnecessary features. Test your designs.
Is it possible?
Yes. Good design will pay off in the end. Whether you are configuring a firewall, writing a mobile device policy or selecting a vendor a little work up front make a big difference in the end. Remember, take a step back. Take a deep breath. Think for a while. Design.
