FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Redspin Team Member Paper on Digital Forensic Reconstruction Accepted at DIMVA
Santa Barbara, CA, March 22, 2006 — Redspin team member has had a paper titled, "Digital Forensic Reconstruction and the Virtual Security Testbed ViSe" accepted at DIMVA 2006, the SIG SIDAR Conference on Detection of Intrusions and Malware & Vulnerability Assessment in Berlin. Redspin security engineer and recent DEFCON Capture the Flag contest winner Paul Haas coauthored the paper with members of the Reliable Software Group at University of California, Santa Barbara.
The paper introduces a novel and time-saving method of reconstructing a digital crime scene on a single computer. Traditional digital crime scene reconstruction involves recreating the operating systems and network connections on multiple machines, and can be both time consuming and expensive. Haas and his colleagues recreate all of the machines and their operating systems virtually, greatly simplifying and speeding up the process.
"It's primarily of interest to anyone in law enforcement," says Haas. "There aren't many labs out there that are able to spend the time or money needed to exactly duplicate the complicated networks of computers needed to accurately replicate digital crime scenes. Hopefully, this will be of some help to them."
The paper will be presented at the conference in Berlin in July, 2006.
